War Memorial Hospital which open in 1928 has been a bit of an eyesore, NHS Foundation Trust sold the site to plug a huge shortfall in the budget. A £300 million health investment in the new City hospital fnished opened in 2010
War Memorial Hospital and was enlarged in continuous phases between 1960 and 1968) and the Edith Cavell Hospital (built 1988). Edith Cavell died as a pioneering nurse exactly 100 years ago, executed by the German army on 12 October 1915 for helping British soldiers get home from Belgium. Her death became notorious across the world, and she was celebrated as a martyr for freedom.
